Cancer Assessment and Risk Evaluation Program

State of the art cancer care right at home.

Ascension Wisconsin is committed to reducing the burden of cancer on you, your family, and our community.

Early detection gives cancer patients the best chance of surviving the disease. Unfortunately, many people who are at greater risk for cancer—because of factors including genetics, the environment, previous cancers, or social determinants such as poverty—do not receive screening early or often enough.

Therefore, in March, 2021, Ascension Wisconsin started to create the first high-risk/early detection program in the state—to prevent cancer through lifestyle modification, detect it when treatment will be most effective, and reduce the burden of cancer on our communities.

We’ll identify and reach underserved patients who would not have access to care otherwise -- targeting those at risk for lung, colorectal, breast, prostate, pancreas, skin, and gynecologic cancers.

We’re acquiring computer equipment to screen patients’ electronic medical records to identify people at high risk, and to offer virtual consultations with caregivers.

We’re adding more patient navigators—to follow up with people at high risk so they get regular screening, and to help guide patients through treatment.

We’re enhancing our cancer care centers in Milwaukee, Wauwatosa, and Brookfield to improve the patient experience.

We’re expanding access to clinical trials for all cancer patients—reaching underserved people.

We’re establishing a robust cancer survivorship program

With her family history of cancer – her father died of colon cancer, and her mother is a breast cancer survivor—Betty was aware that she was at high risk, and she never missed a yearly mammogram.

So she was prepared, as much as one can be, for the news that she herself had breast cancer.

If not for the state-of-the-art mammogram that she received at Ascension Columbia St. Mary’s Cancer Centers, Betty’s cancer might have gone undetected.

For many others like Betty, the new Ascension Wisconsin High-Risk Screening and Early Detection Program will mean everything.

Hours after the news of Betty’s diagnosis, a nurse navigator contacted Betty to set up her care conference. The conference brings the care team – nurse navigator, medical oncologist, radiation oncologist, surgeon, radiologist, and others – together with the patient to develop a treatment plan and a road map to survivorship.

“I had a meeting for a second opinion all scheduled, but after my care conference, I canceled it. This was the team I wanted to take care of me,” Betty said.

Ascension Wisconsin is committed to reducing the burden of cancer on you, your family, and our community.

With your support, we’re expanding our cancer program to reach people at high risk -- to prevent cancers, find and eliminate them earlier, and navigate patients on the journey from diagnosis to survival.

Thanks to you, Ascension Wisconsin cancer care is the best available
