Your Dollars at Work

A generous donor made chapel renovations possible at Ascension Genesys Hospital

A member of our community gave an anonymous donation of nearly $25,000 to renovate the chapel at Ascension Genesys Hospital. This donation made the following updates possible:

• Stained glass windows installed (from the former St. Joseph Hospital)
• New framing for the 12 Stations of the Cross
• A new state-of-the-art audio and visual system
• Enhanced lighting
• New seating
• Refurbished chapel doors

A special blessing and dedication by the Most Reverend Earl Boyea, Bishop of the Diocese of Lansing, was held in May at the newly renovated chapel. During the dedication event, the Bishop recognized how thankful hospital leadership was for the donor who made the chapel renovations possible. He also acknowledged the Ascension Genesys Hospital tradition of serving the community with special attention to those who are poor and vulnerable.

Community reception for new Ascension Regional President

Community leaders, Ascension Genesys Hospital leadership and donors gathered on August 17 to welcome Stephanie Duggan, MD, FACEP, FAAPL, CPE, after she assumed leadership as Regional President and Chief Executive Officer, Ascension Mid-North region hospitals. More than 70 guests attended the reception, hosted by the Ascension Genesys Foundation.

In Dr. Duggan’s role, she leads the health ministries in Mid and Northern Michigan including: Ascension St. Mary’s Hospital in Saginaw, Ascension Standish Hospital in Standish, Ascension St. Joseph Hospital in Tawas City, and now Ascension Genesys Hospital in Grand Blanc.

Dr. Duggan has been serving as President and CEO of Ascension Michigan’s three northernmost hospitals since August 2018, when she returned to her home state of Michigan following the announcement of Ascension’s $50 million investment to grow the health ministry. She assumed leadership of Ascension Genesys Hospital on August 7, with the retirement of Christopher Palazzolo, who served as President and CEO for 18 years.

A board-certified emergency medicine physician, Dr. Duggan began her career at Ascension St. Mary’s Hospital in Saginaw in 1997. Prior to returning to Michigan in 2018, she served as Chief Clinical Officer at Ascension St. Vincent’s Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. Before that, she held various leadership positions at Ascension Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, Florida, including Chief Medical Officer, interim Pharmacy Medical Director and interim Emergency Department Director.

“Based on her outstanding credentials, her experience within Ascension, her commitment to our Mission, and her knowledge of the Mid and Northern Michigan communities, Dr. Duggan is an excellent choice to lead these hospitals and care sites for continued growth and excellence in care,” said Joseph Hurshe, FACHE, Chief Operating Officer, Ascension Michigan. “She is a vibrant, quality-driven servant leader who easily connects with associates, physicians and the communities we are privileged to serve. Her commitment to collaboration and her belief in making a long-lasting difference in the communities we care for will help Ascension Michigan continue as a leading Catholic healthcare provider well into the future.”
